Tuesday, February 06, 2007 Gaisano dumps Skygo, 79-73
METRO Gaisano-University of Cebu Webmasters foiled Skygo-Southwestern University Cobras to make a rousing comeback in the inter-collegiate basketball scene, as it sneaked past the Cobras, 79-73, in last Sunday’s Partners Cup at the Cebu Coliseum.
Metro Gaisano leaned on the end-game heroics of Kelvin Juliane, who sank eight straight points including back to back triples in the final period, to turn a 62-64 deficit into a 70-64 cushion.
The Cobras managed to answer back and take another hairline lead, 73-72, courtesy of the combined forces of Jaime Yap and Eric Zanoria, but it turned out to be their last hurrah.
SWU, which joined its first Cebu Schools Athletic Foundation Inc (Cesafi)-led event for the first time since it disbanded, actually had control of the match, holding five-point leads for most part before crumbling at the end.
Disbanded champ
SWU last competed in Cebu Amateur Athletic Association, the forerunner of the Cesafi. The school claimed the championship crown before disbanding and has failed to compete in the Cesafi since the league started in 2000.
Julianne, a former high school player of the University of the East, and Allain Abellanosa scored 14 points each for Metro Gaisano, while Jonathan Canceran added 13.
Today, 2006 Cesafi runner-up, Hapee-University of San Carlos Warriors and the El Rancho Corned Beef Loaf backed Cebu Institute of Technology Wildcats will take on each other in the 6:30 main game today at the Cebu Coliseum. In the first game Virginia Booster Hotdog University of San Jose Recoletos and Landmaster University of Southern Philippines take on each other at the 4:30p.m.. (MCB)
