Speak out: Suggested CICC events By Richie D. Nolasco Banilad, Cebu City
HOSTING an advertisers’ congress, a tourism expo or a furniture show is not good enough. If the Cebu International Convention Center (CICC) should become the premiere venue of big events on an international scale, I must say that the Department of Tourism, the Cebu Provincial Government and the Cebu Chamber of Commerce and Industry should work closely together in attracting the following big events:
arroyowatch
1. Concerts featuring famous artists like Mariah Carey, Christina Aguilera, Britney Spears, Regine Velasquez and Paris Hilton to name a few.
2. Nintendo’s Space World video gaming convention (it will attract lots of video game players, businessmen, families and tech-oriented tourists).
3. The Miss Universe beauty pageant.
4. The Anime Expo (AX).
5. MacWorld-Apple Computer’s annual expo that always featured Steve Jobs.
6. The Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (Apec), an annual convention that's much more important and more beneficial than the Asean summit.
7. The MTV Asia Music Video Awards
8. The Games Convention, a premiere video gaming convention. Attracts the same audience as No. 2 but with more big spenders and tech-oriented tourists.
9. The NBA All-Star Game (Cebu could be the first-ever overseas host of this event).
10. The Consumer Electronics Show, a high tech show that attracts every big name in the tech industry including Bill Gates.
11. StarStruck: The Next Level finale.
12. The Game Developers Conference.
13. Philippine Basketball Association regular season games.
14. The 2007 Metro Manila Film Festival grand parade or awards night.
15. The 2014 Asian Games (Philippines could win the hosting rights soon).
If our leaders cannot attract the above events at all, then the CICC might as well end up as an expensive waste. Bring these events now and make Cebu the premiere destination for any event and for any audience.
