Alcoseba named delegation head

CEBU City Councilor Raul “Yayoy” Alcoseba received the formal appointment yesterday from the Philippine Sports Commission (PSC) naming him as Cebu’s head of delegation for the coming Arafura Games on May 12-19 in the city of Darwin, Northern Territory, Australia.

Alcoseba, vice chairman of the Cebu City Sports Commission, said he welcomes the task handed to him by PSC Chairman William “Butch” Ramirez.

Reports of Alcoseba’s appointment, though, received a lot of flak especially since the city has not yet finalized its decision on whether to join in the Arafura Games or not.

Last Tuesday, Greater Cebu Sports Organizing Committee (GCSOC) executive director Allan Torrevillas and PSC 7 head Fr. Vic Uy went to Ramirez to plead for him to designate another head of delegation.

The GCSOC, for its part, has already finalized its entry to the meet.

Torrevillas said their resistance to Alcoseba’s appointment stemmed from the fact that the councilor has not made a move on the Arafura preparations and refused to work with GCSOC.

Torrevillas said after they met with Ramirez that the latter reportedly agreed to replace Alcoseba with PSC commissioner Ambrosio de Luna as Cebu’s head of delegation.

But the formal appointment received by Alcoseba yesterday contradicted what Ramirez promised to the GCSOC officials.
