Lower Kawayan cops Sambag 1 tourney’s championship tiara
TEAM Atan Guardo-Lower Kawayan recovered from a lukewarm start with aplomb to rally past Tangkongan, 66-61, in their sudden-death final match to win the championship of the Sambag I Christmas League basketball tournament at the Barangay Sambag 1 Sports Complex.
The Lower Kawayan stalwarts were ice-cold from the start resulting into a nine-point deficit after the first period, 15-24.

Kawayan, however, woke up from deep offensive slumber and fired back in the middle quarters where they outscored Tangkongan, 39-26, to erase the deficit and gained a four-point headway, 54-50, entering the last 10-minute mark of the contest.
Kawayan played steadier in the crucial stretch to hang on to a four-point victory. Kenneth Sala topscored for Kawayan with 21 points followed by Anthony Fernandez and Anthon Fernandez with 19 and 11 markers, respectively.
All of Tangkongan’s five players cashed in double figures led by Ruben Castillo’s 17 points, but their efforts went to waste.
Tito Serencio scored 14, while Patricio Batoto, Bador Gascon and Anthony Bacalla chipped in 10 points apiece in a losing cause.
“It’s a hard-earned championship and I commend my boys for playing with a lot of heart. They deserved this victory,” said team manager Jeson Guardo. “I would also like to take this opportunity to thank our team owner, Mr. Jonathan Guardo.
Winning our first championship of the year would not have been possible without his all-out support to the team.”
