Saturday, February 10, 2007 Montiel sees tough bout vs. Z Gorres
MEXICAN World Boxing Organization (WBO) Super-flyweight champion Fernando “Chucolito” Montiel is confident he could win over Cebuano sensation Z “The Dream” Gorres in the SGG Sports Promotions and Golden Boy Promotions event dubbed “Moment of Truth” on Feb. 24 at the Cebu City Sports Complex.
Montiel and his father and trainer-manager Manuel will be leaving their hometown in Los Mochis, Mexico on Feb. 16 for Cebu.
The father-and-son tandem, though, believe they will be fighting against heavy odds. “Fernando is very motivated, we know that we go to a very hard and difficult fight; that is to say, they expect us to lose… because Golden Boy Promotions did not win the bidding and to present the fight in the US. But it does not scare us, we are used to this (situation) and we are going to win,” said the older Montiel.
Montiel’s three-year contract with the Golden Boy Promotion has already expired and the Montiels are seeking to renew their contract with Oscar De La Hoya’s boxing outfit once they arrive in Cebu.
“Z Gorres is very good, a very complete one and has a very good defense, so this will be a great fight,” Manuel added.
The card, which will be covered by ABS-CBN through The Filipino Channel, will be beamed to Aztec TV.
Meanwhile, the “Moment of Truth” has gone more exciting as Cebuano sensation AJ “Bazooka” Banal is going to see action in the undercard against the former Pan-Asian Boxing Association super-flyweight champion Komrith Evereadygym in an eight-round encounter. (RCM)
