USC picks five imports

IN an effort to boost his squad, University of San Carlos football coach Joshua Fegidero has picked up six players from three schools to join them for the Private Schools Athletic Association (Prisaa) Regional Meet in Tagbilaran later this week.

Fegidero, who used to play for the national team, is eyeing a slot in the national finals in Iloilo for a chance to coach against his brother’s team, West Negros College.

WNC, handled by his elder brother Norman, the hero of the memorable 1-0 win against Malaysia in the 1991 Southeast Asian Games, already booked a slot to the finals after winning the Region 6 title.

“Sadya ni, if we qualify to the nationals. This will be the first time that I get to coach against him,” said the younger Fegidero.

Regionals

For the regionals, where they will play a best of three series against Silliman University, Fegidero has picked up University of the Visayas’ Frederick Alazas and Junard Aguilar.

Alazas is a trusty defender who can also play goalkeeper, while Aguilar is a proven scoring threat and has the speed to give the defense a lot of head ache.

Aside from the two, Fegidero also picked up Vic Pacaña, Ian John Casayan and Michael Diano from the University of Southern Philippines-Foundation and Franco Cedullo from the University of San Jose-Recoletos.

Meanwhile, USC’s preparation got snagged a bit after it lost to Team Cebu City, 2-3, in the Aboitiz Division B last Sunday. The Cebu Schools Athletic Foundation Inc. champion led 1-0 early before conceding three goals.

In that loss, Robert Cañeda was also injured and suffered a slight dislocation of his shoulder.

“But he said he wants to play. The dislocation is not that much. Makaya ra,” said Fegidero. (ML)
