A playful look at pigs By Letecia-Suarez Orendain
WHO am I?
I wallow in mire as my version of mankind’s beauty mudpack, although this habit has given me the reputation for being dirty.
Forgive me. I lack functional sweat glands so there’s no choice but to do the mudpack trick to keep cool, or to fend off the deadly rays of the sun. Unless hog raisers provide me with spa-quality pens, I will continue to glory in mud.
By this time you know I’m The Pig, said to be the animal to influence your life in 2007. The Chinese zodiac says I’m trustful, honest, very sincere, a fun and an enlightening “pork-sonality.” That’s a big leap from being the lowly mud lover (but people love me to death) to being a harbinger of good luck.
If you want to know more, here’s a list of some of my finer traits (and the less fine ones, like being oblivious and obstinate).
I’m a gallant and courteous friend, and a loving presence. No command is too small when it comes to my Love. I’d trot a mile to get my Love a trough of mush on a rainy night.
In addition, I’m a very devoted lover, the perfect Valentine. Yet when someone cheats on me, or hurts me, I never hit back simply because I’m peaceful, tolerant and even naïve to a fault.
It’s not that I’m dumb. No, in fact I’m usually intellectual and discerning in my reading matter. I’ve read The Three Little Pigs, a touching tale about three siblings in danger of becoming homeless; and the Little Book of Pigs, a book of illustrated poems and verses.
I agree that my gullibility is a magnet for others to pig out on my caring spirit. Pig-headed describes me, naturally, because I’m too stubborn to listen to warnings about being taken advantage of. My sensitive nature opens me to heartaches that I overcome by drinking from the cup of life. Yes, I’m a sensualist who knows how to live well.
My likeness has inspired popular tales, like Hooray for Pig and Charlotte’s Web. As sure as these stories delight, you can also be sure that you can trust me. When push comes to pull, I will be there for you.
