CAGAYAN DE ORO - Koichi Horii towed Cebu Country Club (CCC) to a precarious one-point lead in the Founders Division of the Philippine Airlines Interclub Senior's Tournament at the Delmonte Golf and Country Club yesterday.
Today, the eight-man team, led by team captain Rene Sarmiento, will go for their second title in six years, when they play their final 18 holes at the Pueblo de Oro Golf and Country Club.
Horii scored 49 points in the first day, while Masaya Hishida and Eddie Ong added identical rounds of 47. Efren Sarmiento and Nasatsugu Ochiai also scored 45 each for CCC's 233 output in day one.
Rookie Anton Florendo and Julius Neri had 42, and Rene Sarmiento had 34 but their scores weren't counted as only the top five are tallied for the day.
Chasing the Cebuanos in their hunt for the Founder's crown is Camp Evangelista, which is just a point behind.
Art Empamano had the best round among the top four teams in the division with a 51, while Celio Inovero had a 46 and Tony Enteria, Joey Medalla and Raul Noble added 45 points, each.
On course
Last year's champion, Wack Wack Golf, is still on course to defend their crown after opening with a 230 to take third place.
Jose Antonio Lim led with 47 points, while Benjamin Abalos, Jose Santos and Alexander Sison had 46 each and Stewart Go had a 45.
Valley Golf capped the top four with 229, led by Aristeo San Agustin's 49 and Arturo Fontanilla's 47. Bonifacio Sumbilla added 45 and Rolando Kapunan and Jose Vilchez tallied 44.
Another Cebu Team, the Mactan Coral Golf and Country Club was at eighth with 217.
Meanwhile, Club Filipino de Cebu improved on its 2006 performance after placing seventh in the Friendship Division.
Club Filipino, which finished at 19th in the Sportswriters division last year, tallied a two-day total of 360. Ed Franco was the most productive with 43 and 42, while Eduardo Osmeña had 35 and 35. Danilo Flores improved on his 33 in the first day with a 35, while Leo Alvez had 32 in the second day.
Lead snatched
Camp Aguinaldo snatched the lead from Lanang Country Club to top the event with a 436 (214-222), while Iligan GCC shares second with Lanang 421 (201-220) .
Lanang had the lead in Day one with a 220, but faltered with a 201 in the final day to lose the lead.
Though he may be on the tail end of Lanang's output, Victor Gonzales was the biggest winner yesterday after scoring an ace in the sixth hole at Pueblo de Oro GCC.
Gonzales, who tallied a 39 yesterday, won a first class trip from Manila to the US for his efforts.
In the Championship Division, Canlubang took a six point lead over rival Luisita going into the second day. Canlubang scored 252, while Luisita had 246.
