Holiday in Cebu City this Saturday

CEBU City will observe a special non-working holiday on its Charter anniversary on Saturday, but activities will not be held until March 3.

City Public Information Officer Nagiel Bañacia said the Charter Day anniversary will coincide with the boxing match at the Cebu City Sports Center, which the City Government is co-sponsoring.

“This is the biggest boxing activity in Cebu and we’re supporting the event to the extent that we have decided to postpone our anniversary activities,” he told Sun.Star Cebu.

Feb. 24 will be a non-working day for the private and public sector in the city, Bañacia said. There will also be no classes in both private and public schools.

Instead of holding the awarding ceremony this Saturday, the City Government will hand out the awards to outstanding individuals and institutions on March 3 at the Cebu City Sports Center.

The City will honor 38 individuals and institutions that “contributed” to the growth of the city, including party-list group Bayan Muna and Tessie Fernandez of Abanse! Pinay.

Mayor Tomas Osmeña cited Bayan Muna for a peaceful protest action during the 12th Asean Summit and for yielding to his wish that its members refrain from holding rallies at the Cebu International Convention Center (CICC) where several Asean meetings were held.

Fernandez was chosen for being instrumental in Cebu City’s having been chosen by the United Nations as the most woman-friendly city in the Asia-Pacific region last year.

The mayor also picked eight barangays for banding together to ensure peace and order. (LCR)
