Retanal, Makinano post wins in chess wars
By Jed G. Calomarde

SCORING an immaculate five points in his final match, William Retanal Jr. clinched the February edition of the month’s Cebu Executives and Professionals Chess Association (Cepca) handicapping chess tournament over the weekend.

Retanal, in a move that wowed a crowed that had gathered at the Bibo Chess Club on D. Jakosalem St., attacked Manuel Abucay from a Pirc defense in the last round and, after a hair-raising exchange, secured a slot in the grand finals this December.

The event, held in cooperation with the Prime Parts Fabricators and Sales Inc., his held every month and open to all Class A, B and C wood pushers as well as to all Cepca members/players.

Also in the match, Miguel Banibane stopped Rene Casia with a Caro Kahn defense to land in second place. Percy Fiel, for his part, humbled Mandy Baria with a Sicilian defense to win the third slot.

Rounding the top six are Casia, Abucay and Henry Cari-at. Cari-at won over Luis Minoza in an Urangutan open.

The other games had Joe Atillo halting Nick Cuizon in a Reti open as Maggie Dionson and Glenn Dakay crushed Fred Sandalo and Edgar Moncal via a Queen’s Pawn game and a French defense respectively.

Active Chess

As this developed, Fide Master Anthony Makinano proved his mastery against other local wood pushers as he scored six points to win the Manaloto-Saniel Active Chess tournament also at the Bibo Chess Club recently.

FM Makinano needed only to split his point in the last round against Adonis Buenaventura in a Queen’s Gambit decline to win his second tournament for the year. Makinano went home P1,500 richer.

The loss had Buenaventura, with 5.5 points, competing for second place with Richard Natividad, Erwin Ababat and Nelman Lagutin. He eventually capped the silver after a tie-break that had him up by 24.

Natividad, who had 22 points, defeated Joel Pacuribot in a Queen’s Pawn open and got third place.

Ababat landed in fourth place with a win over Carlos Moreno III in a Sicilian defense while Lagutin got 5th place after beating Joseleo Cortes in another Queen’s Pawn open.

Completing the top seven spots were Leonardo Alidani, sixth place and Carlo Maraat, seventh place.

Alidani halted Rommel Asoque in a Caro Kahn defense while Maraat toppled Cy Balbuena in a Sicilian defense.
