CAGAYAN de Oro - A day after facing a double-digit deficit, the Cebu Country Club showed why it wasn't too worried as it banked on Mark Dy's record-setting performance to take a share of the lead in the Founder's Division of the PAL Interclub at the Del Monte Golf and Country Club yesterday.
Playing in his first round of the four-day event, Dy tallied a tournament best 40 points as CCC erased Orchard's 11-point lead. (Not 13 as earlier reported) with yesterday's 133 to up their total to 242.
Dy's score was the best performance of a CCC player in the history of the tournament, while their total yesterday was also a record best.
"I was in the zone today. Nothing could go wrong and my focus was like nothing I've ever felt before," said the 25-year-old Dy.
Team captain Montito Garcia, who scored 33 on the first day, added another 35 today, while Nonoy Tirol had 30. Marko Sarmiento and William Hong had 28 each for CCC, which is seeking its third straight title and sixth in seven years.
"We reviewed our first day performance, then made the appropriate adjustments to our game plan. And the players, especially Mark, responded well," said Garcia.
Tomorrow the team will return to Pueblo de Oro and will field Eric Deen, Jovi Neri, Hong and Joseph Stevens in the crucial third round as they seek to keep their momentum and open a lead.
Top spot
First day leader Orchard tallied 222 to share the top spot with the Cebuanos.
Raymund Sangil led the team with 33, while Renato Unson had 32. Tuan Nguyen and Salvador Arcilla had 29 and 28 respectively.
Wack Wack remained at second spot with 236 after yesterday's 120.
In the Sportswriters division, Mactan Coral Golf and Country Club jumped to third place from fifth, while Alta Vista Golf and Country Club climbed five places to sixth.
Mactan scored 113 for a two-day total of 212, while Alta Vista had 110 yesterday for 204.
Hubert Calan led Mactan with 31, while Jonathan Dionson had 30. Renato Aquino and Ramon Morad had 29 and 23, respectively.
Kwang Kim and Enrico Solon led Alta Vista with 31 and 29, respectively, while Matias Aznar IV had 27 and Edgardo Acain scored 23.
Premier division
In the premier championship division, Manila Southwoods chipped two points off Canlubang's lead with a 135 yesterday for a two day total of 273.
Canlubang, which is seeking a repeat, is still ahead despite cruising to a 133 in the second round for a 282, while Del Monte remains at third with 268.
Gene Bondoc led Southwoods with 35, while Jong Laput had 34. Junjun Plana and Mike Bibat had 33 each.
Jay Bayron and Robert Bernis paced Canlubang with 35 each, while Mario Labajo hada 34 and Jesselito Saragoza scored 29.
The PAL Interclub, the country's longest-running amateur golf tournament, is backed by Action Asia, Airbus, Boeing, Callaway Golf, 10.1 Crossover, GE Aviation, Gecas, Mizuno, People Asia and Royal Caribbean.
