Cebu ship rescues 250 in Indonesia
A CEBU-registered vessel plying an international route rescued about 250 passengers and crew from a burning ship in Indonesia at 2:00 p.m. Thursday while on its way to Jakarta to unload cargoes.
Maritime Industry Authority (Marina) 7 Director Glenn Cabañez said that mv Princess Vanessa of London Shipping Agents Corp. owned by spouses Neil and Elizabeth Nehrujee volunteered in the rescue.
Cabañez said mv Princess Vanessa was sailing for Jakarta to unload cargos when they passed by a burning ship, mv Levina. The crew of mv Princess Vanessa, headed by Captain Ruperto G. Troy went to the rescue.
“They (crew) have saved lives and the Indonesians praised them”, Cabañez said.
Neil Nehrujee told Sun.Star Cebu in a telephone interview that their vessels are plying Cebu, Malaysia, Indonesia, China, Brunei, Solomon Island, Dumaguete City and Davao City. They have an office on A.C. Cortes St., Mandaue City.
Neruhjee said the company is proud of the ship’s crew.
“The continuous training and orientation in emergency rescue operations, ship safety and other safety awareness program resulted to (a heroic action) of the crew, under the supervision of Optacio Boo Jr.”, read the press statement sent by Neruhjee to Sun.Star Cebu.
The Cable News Network (CNN) reported how the crew of mv Princess Vanessa conducted the rescue operations.
He said the rescue operation has given a good name not only to the company but to the country, whose flag is carried by mv Princess Vanessa.
Marina 7 regularly inspects mv Princess Vanessa together with the classification of the Ocean Register of Shipping Inc. under Engineer Joselito de Guia, the chief surveyor.
Cabañez said his office will coordinate with all shipping companies in the Visayas in conducting rescue operations. (EOB)
