Junie says he or Clavel not ruling out fight v. Gwen
FORMER congressman Celestino “Junie” Martinez Jr. warns Cebu Gov. Gwendolyn Garcia against thinking that she will have no opponent in the May 14 elections.
“She might have the surprise of her life,” said Junie.
Last Thursday, Martinez and his allies in the fourth district held a meeting at the White Gold House where he announced that he is running for Bogo mayor, which will be vacated by his son Celestino “Tining” Martinez III.
Tining is running for Congress.
In that meeting, Rep. Clavel Martinez, who is on her last term, also said she has not closed her doors to running for governor. March 29 is the last day of filing of certificates of candidacy for local positions.
Junie said it is not only his wife Clavel but both of them are still open to the gubernatorial race.
Earlier, Garcia said the talks that she will not have an opponent are not affecting her in any way, as she is “ready to face anyone of whatever gender.”
Best bet
Also, Garcia said that she has done projects and other duties as governor at the same pace that she did since she first assumed office.
Several names have been floated as the person who will possibly block her reelection.
Rep. Simeon Kintanar (Cebu, 2nd district) had admitted that former governor Lito Osmeña asked him to run for governor but he refused.
Rep. Antonio Yapha (Cebu, 3rd district) has also been approached but begged off.
There are also reports that Lito is thinking of running himself.
Another former governor, Rep. Eduardo Gullas (Cebu, 1st district), was also considered as a candi-date but he announced that he is supporting Garcia.
Former senator John “Sonny” Osmeña was earlier reported as saying that Clavel is Garcia’s best opponent, being a woman like Garcia. (JPM)
