Nerry to seek reelection; Luigi not sure

CEBU Provincial Board Member Gabriel Luis “Luigi” Quisumbing is not sure yet whether he will seek a congressional seat this year.

In an interview yesterday, Quisumbing said he is still exploring as many options as he can.

“But I haven’t closed any doors,” he told reporters.

If Luigi runs for Congress, he will face off with incumbent Rep. Nerissa Soon-Ruiz, who will be seeking reelection under Kampi.

There were talks that Ruiz will run for mayor in Mandaue but a press statement issued yesterday specifically stated that she will run again for Congress in the May 14 elections.

“While she is thankful for the expressions of support and encouragement from many concerned individuals urging her to run for mayor of Mandaue City, the congresswoman likewise considers with equal significance the desire of her constituents in the district asking her to continue to serve as their representative, aside from heeding the wishes of her own family. Furthermore, she intends to finish her legislative agenda in the next Congress,” said a press statement from Ruiz’s office.

Quisumbing, who was recently appointed sixth district chairman of the Lakas party, said he is still consulting leaders in the district.

But Lakas spokesperson for the Visayas Elberto Emphasis earlier said that Quisumbing is running for Congress.

When asked if his next move as Lakas district chairman is the signing of certificates of nomination of candidates for Mandaue City, he said ideas will still be gathered so the group can come up with an ideal slate.

He said the group just wants to be sure about its decision.

In an earlier interview, mayoral aspirant Jonas Cortes said he has “felt” the support of the Qui-sumbings.

The Provincial Board member is a grandson of industrialist Norberto Quisumbing Jr., who owns the Norkis Group of Companies.

The company is at odds with the Mandaue City Government after the City took over a piece of property that the company was occupying in Barangay Looc.

City Hall officials said that Norkis did not comply with the terms of the agreement it entered into with the City Government on the use of the lot.

Norkis, for its part, said that the City gained entry to the property without a court order. The legal battle on the issue is now pending in court.

Luigi said yesterday that the development is just “unfortunate” after the family-owned company has been contributing to Mandaue through taxes and outreach programs. (AAG)
