UV continues win streak to stay on top with SWU in beach volley

UNIVERSITY of the Visayas (UV) extended its winning roll in the 1st M. Lhuillier Kwarta Padala All Ladies Beach Volleyball Invitational last weekend at Wiggy’s Beach Resort in Lilo-an.

Backed by Cebu Diesel Supply, UV of Jusabel Brillo and Janez Ygot, registered another victory after trouncing the Jaguars Mechell Matuguina and Angielove Cabiles in straight sets, 21-14, 21-10, to keep its record untarnished with three wins.

Brillo, 2005 Gov. Gwen Garcia Cup MVP and Ygot went to work right away wasting no time in disposing off the Jaguars as they vaulted to a 13-5 lead, from which the Jaguars failed to recover.

Dumbfounded

The second set went considerably easy for UV, despite the Jaguars managing to stay within striking distance from UV, at 5-6. However, UV blasted off with an 8-0 rally that left the Jaguars dumbfounded.

After dropping all of its games, the Jaguars lost its claim to the crown, as it is currently at the bottom of the 10-team pack with a 0-3 ledger.

UV, on the other hand, shares the leaderboard with Southwestern University’s Janelle Tabio and Maritess Natad, who scored their third straight victory at the expense of University of San Carlos’ Kristeen Ybañez and Jeremie Montalba, logging a 21-8, 21-17 win.

Meanwhile, Verano sisters Ericka and Yvonne of Crunchicken-University of Southern Philippines Foundation (USPF) bounced back from its loss when they trounced their USPF predecessors Marissa Lagancia and Elen Pongase, the X-Panthers, 21-19, 21-16.

At third spot

USPF now sports a 2-1 win-loss slate, sharing the third spot with Exas’ Kenneth Garces and Aina Laroga.

Keeping their title bids alive are University of San Jose-Recoletos and Hiroshi, which both hold 2 wins and are currently lodged at second spot.

The tournament is sponsored by M. Lhuillier Kwarta Padala, ML Pamilya Insurance Plans, M. Lhuillier pawnshops, Nature’s Spring and Bodytone.

The champion duo will take home P5,000, while the second to fourth placers get P3,000, P2,000 and P1,000 respectively. Special awards will also be given to the MVP and Darling of the Crowd. (MCB)
