EL Rancho-Cebu Institute of Technology Wildcats ended its bid in the Partners Cup caging in style as it pulled off a come-from-behind win against the Landmasters-University of Southern Philippines Foundation (USPF), 74-70, yesterday at the Cebu Coliseum.
The Wildcats trailed behind the Landmasters in the entire game but kept things close with a semi-rally in the dying minutes of the third period.
After falling behind by as much as 12 points, the Wildcats started going back to work behind the efforts of Gerry Lumongsod, who made his presence felt in the third frame.
The Wildcats rode on the scorching scoring blitz of Lumungsod, who scored 11 of his 13 points in the penultimate quarter to set the stage for CIT’s win.
The Wildcats finally grabbed the lead, 69-68, in the final minute and 41 seconds of the game courtesy of Sherwin Abobo’s twinner.
Abobo topscored for CIT as he scattered 25 points, while Aniñon added 10 markers in helping CIT register its second win after the latter defeated Virginia-University of San Jose-Recoletos (USJ-R).
The USPF Panthers were headed by Moncrief Rogado, who finished with 21 points, and Dominic Ceniza, who posted 18 markers.
Despite the win, though, the Wildcats of coach Alex dela Torre and Marvin Felices are out of the picture for the semifinal round as it could only muster a 2-win, 4-loss record.
USPF, on the other hand, ended its campaign with a dismal 0-6 win-loss record.(MCB)
