HAPEE Teethmasters team owner Jack Huang claimed he was unaware of the alleged existing contract that tied his new recruit Jayford Rodriguez to his former team, the M. Lhuillier Kwarta Padala Jewelers.
Last Thursday, Rodriguez, a former stalwart of the University of the Visayas, was sued by M. Lhuillier for breach of contract and damages.
The said contract prohibited Rodriguez from playing with another team for the duration of the contract with the Jewelers, which competes in the MVBA.
“This is the first time that I am made aware of the said case. If there was a contract, Jayford would have shown me already,” Huang said.
Huang added that Rodriguez assured him he doesn’t have any obligations anymore with other teams before he was accepted.
“As for me, we hire players in good faith. When a player approaches me, I ask them if they do not have any commitments before I sign them up,” said Huang, whose team placed second in the recently concluded Silver Cup of the Philippine Basketball League (PBL).
The basketball patron said that the PBL is very strict when it comes to players transferring from one team to another or from one league to another, but said that they only have one thing in focus. “Atong tuyo has always been for the betterment of the players,” Huang said. (MCB)
