Quijano: Cebooos for sale?
By Jingo Quijano
Last Round

AS IS typical in the aftermath of a huge boxing event such as the Montiel-Gorres tiff, I receive a lot of email from boxing fans eager to dissect the fistic event that just transpired. And since The Last Round is a boxing fan’s column for the boxing fan, today I give in to two Last Rounders, boxing gurus in their own right.

First off is Dr. Wilson dela Calzada, (wdlcmd@yahoo.com) a young orthopedic surgeon who submitted the following autopsy report: “GORRES WON THAT FIGHT! Even with the two-point deduction, the best that Montiel could have gotten was a draw.

I had Gorres winning by 4 points with Z winning 11 rounds (rds. 1, 2, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9) to Montiel’s 4 (rds. 4, 10, 11, 12). I don’t know about you but I noticed that our guys don’t throw enough body punches (except for Boom-Boom that night. but in other fights, I think he does not throw as much too).

Pinoy Votes: Sun.Star Election 2007

Montiel was coming off a long period of inactivity so conditioning was probably not 100 percent. Z had very good lateral head and body movements, and in several occasions in the fight when he would duck to his right, Montiel’s left side of the body was so open, he could probably throw, with his quickness, 2-3 rapid punches (like the way Jose Luis Castillo throws them).
Had he done so, Montiel would have started feeling his punches by the 10th and he would not have been rocked by that monster punch.”

Dr. Dela Calzada is my UP Latagaw fraternity brod and when he’s not practicing his craft, he and his lovely wife Dr. Janette Resurreccion attend to their lively brood of five kids.

Thanks “tol” for your insights. If ever I feel a bit under the weather, expect a call from me. No, I’m not gonna have my bones examined, they’re fine thank you. But you’re gonna have to write my column for me.

Next up is Yani Dy (yanidy@sbcglobal.net) who writes: “I always make it a point to read your column like a prescription from a good doctor. With regards to the Z fight, painful as it may be but I would agree that it is really not time for Z to be a champion. He got hurt, wobbled and almost put to sleep. Ref Viruet’s deductions without warning raises some issues here but that is just secondary. Had it happened in Thailand and/or Japan against a foreign champ, then results would have been different. But not here where Filipinos would kiss the butts first of these foreigners and let them have the bag. How sad.

You know, just like Julio Cesar Chavez Jr., Rey “Boom Boom is overrated (At least in my opinion). He has never fought anybody decent. We will know on May 5.”

Well Yani, I agree that there is always the tendency to over-hype a prospect, but after personally witnessing him deliver a left hook that landed with a sickening thud to Montiel Gonzales’ liver, I am convinced that “Boom Boom” is the goods. Indeed, May 5 will be a day of reckoning for him.

CEBOOOS STAGED? A recent post on the Manila Bulletin Online (“Boos in Cebu done by Pacquiao foes”) caught my attention. According to the said article, the booing was purportedly organized and perpetrated by hecklers paid by Pacquiao’s political opponents. Excuse me? I consider this as an affront to us Cebuanos. This writer was at ringside and I’m quite old enough mind you, to know that it was spontaneous and unrehearsed. Cebuano crowds are notorious for being difficult to please, I admit that, but to insinuate that we are not quite capable of displaying our collective disapproval spontaneously and simultaneously is an insult that I will not take sitting down. You see, unlike the wowowee crowds in Manila, Cebooo-anos are not for sale. Keep the boos coming guys.

COMELEC ENDORSER. I have it on good authority that the Comelec has enlisted the services of one of the protagonists in last week’s Moment of Truth, in an effort to encourage people to exercise the right of suffrage.

Their endorser? Simson Butar Butar.

THE LAST ROUND. The last round goes out to Atty. Neil Nunez, our newest last rounder as well as to Dr. Oliver Baclig, my best friend since our short khaki pants days, who is celebrating his birthday this month. Cheers! (jingo_quijano@yahoo.com)
