Friday, March 09, 2007 Speak out: Oblation walk By Kimberly May Lasala Villacrusis UP BAMC 2
I WITNESSED for second time the popular Oblation Run at the University of the Philippines and it was different than the last one I saw.
The Oblation Run this year is now an Oblation Walk. The “runners” are already walking. It gave me the impression they are proud walking naked in front of many people.
I was shocked seeing them just walk. Also, some of the participants did not cover their faces like they usually do.
I asked one of the “runners” why they were walking. He said running is tiresome and dangerous. One of them reportedly got hurt by a thumb tack last year.
I understand that walking is safer. But running is tiring? Does this mean they are now also tired of voicing out issues in the university?
Still, I salute them for having the guts to face people even when naked. And if the audacity is caused by their intention to advance student issues, then I admire them more.
Indeed, time runs fast and so does change. But whether this change is for the better or for worse, I don’t know.
