Role of women ‘not fully realized’
WHILE there are women who now occupy important government positions, the role of women in society has yet to be fully realized, especially in the rural areas.
Cebu Provincial Board (PB) member Agnes Magpale said only 17 percent of the country’s women become political leaders.
While women are generally hesitant to join public service, they perform well in the double role of mother/wife and worker, said Magpale. Magpale heads the PB committee on women and children.

For this month, which is Women’s Month, Magpale filed two resolutions on the economic empowerment of women.
Focus
The first resolution “urges all city, municipality, and town mayors to increase livelihood opportunities and entrepreneurial skills for married, elderly, indigenous, and differently-abled women.”
“This is what we really lack. Sad to say, the focus of local chief executives is on infrastructure,” said Magpale.
The second resolution “aims to mobilize women in the local legislative bodies and establish of a network for genuine empowerment in the field of governance.”
“People kept asking why we keep celebrating Women’s Month. It’s because women are still marginalized, but it doesn’t mean women will be above men,” she said. (NRC)
