Friday, March 16, 2007 Red Bull wins to take solo lead
RED Bull seized the solo leadership in the 2007 Talk N Text PBA Fiesta Conference, after the Barakos outlasted the Alaska Aces, 124-113, in overtime yesterday at the Olivares College Gym.
The Barakos squandered a double digit lead in the second half before recovering their poise in the extension period to log their third-straight win and grab the solo spot.
Sophomore Larry Fonacier, last year’s Rookie of the Year awardee, played an awesome game for the Barakos, as he finished with 23 markers, including nine in the extra period that broke the game wide open.
Import James Penny also etched monster numbers as he logged a conference-high 44 points on top of 14 rebounds and three steals for Red Bull.
But it was Fonacier who really glittered in the game as he shot 9-of-12 from the field and went 4-of-5 from the three-point area to spearhead the win for Red Bull.
Tempo
The Barakos controlled the tempo of the game at the end of the second and third cantos as they outscored the Aces, 69-59, and, 96-86.
But the Aces bounced right back into the game in the final period and even managed to grab the lead briefly in the middle of the period, before their scoring machine conked out in the last 3:42 of the game.
Luckily for Alaska, Red Bull also went cold after tying the count at 108-all in the last 2:37 to send the game into overtime.
Carlo Sharma added 11 points for the Barakos, who dealt the Aces the latter’s first loss in three games. (JSV)
