Girl power
By Rachelle Marie Gutierrez Dangin
University of the Philippines in the Visayas Cebu College

LADIES, have you thought of what life would be if you were born a guy? With tall, muscular body, thick mustache, hard-pressed six-packed abs and a well-defined Adam’s apple? How do you think would you look?

If so, things would have been easier. We can do a wider spectrum of things. We get to hang by the jeepney’s end without getting inquisitive looks from fellow passengers, or join basketball and soccer games without fear of being attacked forefront.

Pinoy Votes: Sun.Star Election 2007

We won’t even have to sit with legs and feet together. We can spare ourselves from the hassle of protecting our skirts from being blown off by the winds. Best of all, we get to do without the pains and torture of a monthly period.

Things I’ve wildly thought about. But if given the chance to live again, would you still want to be born as a girl, as a woman? I would.

There’s a great difference between the two genders. And for me, nothing beats the power of women. She’s got so much drive, pushing her to test her limits and achieve what she aspires to be. She is passionate about her advocacies, and is capable of doing things that are nearly impossible. Her mysterious aura and sometimes confusing and strong personality weaken the strong fortresses of men, and eventually earn their respect.

Being the women that we are, we get certain privileges. The traditional “ladies first” is still practiced, some men still give way for women. And even if it happens only occasionally and in the remotest of places, a few men still give up their bus seats for the women. When making requests, the ladies are usually treated more kindly than men. Finally, like men, women are now looked up to for the causes they fight for, their achievements in society, and some in politics.

See? Being a woman is one of the greatest blessings. And the best thing about it? “It’s the prerogative to have a little fun,” as Shania Twain puts it. So hold your heads high ladies! Happy Women’s Month! :)
