Monday, March 19, 2007 Bardon wins OPBF title in Japan
JOJO Bardon scored the biggest upset of his career as he defeated erstwhile undefeated Masaharu Naganawa of Japan to win the vacant Oriental and Pacific Boxing Federation flyweight title held yesterday at the Nagoya International Conference Hall in Nagoya, Japan.
Bardon who left the country almost unnoticed will comeback a hero after crowning himself as the newest regional champion following his split decision win over Naganawa.
Despite Gerry Peñalosa’s misfortunes in Las Vegas, Bardon who also hails from San Carlos City, Negros Occidental will give honor to his hometown after winning the WBC affiliated regional belt, hours after the former lost by unanimous decision to Mexican champion Daniel Ponce De Leon for the WBO and IBA super bantamweight titles.
His manager Rex “Wakee” Salud, credited the victory for Bardon’s dedication and hardwork at the gym as it was a tough fight facing a Japanese prospect at his homeland.
Before the fight, the No.3 contender Naganawa held a perfect 11-0 record including two KO wins and came as the heavy favorite to win the title vacated by compatriot Daisuke Naito last month. (RCM)
