Monday, March 19, 2007 USJ-R, SWU square off in finals
THE first-ever Visayas Amateur Athletic Association (VAAA) championship starts tonight, as the University of San Jose-Recoletos (USJ-R) Jaguars square off with the Southwestern University (SWU) Cobras in Game 1 of the best-of-three championship series at the University of San Carlos Gym at 6 p.m.
The University of San Carlos Warriors and the Salazar Colleges of Science and Institute of Technology Skyblazers will also start their own series for the third place finish to open the hostilities at 4:30 p.m.
Both teams know each other very well as they have played against each other for at least eight games now before meeting in the final stage.
USJ-R mentor Edito Salacot knew he had the advantage in experience and man power but he put his worries on the conditioning of his players, who happened are engaged in tough games against the Cobras in the Partner’s Cup semifinals.
For coach Dodie Miego and his Cobras, they have nothing to lose as they have already proven one thing – the Cobras still have the venom, despite their six-years absence from the collegiate basketball circuit. (RCM)
