Budget airline to fly to Taipei

MANILA Cebu Pacific Air will begin offering daily direct flights between Manila and Taiwan starting June 13, the Philippine carrier announced here yesterday.

Cebu Pacific, the airline unit of publicly-listed conglomerate JG Summit Holdings Inc., said it will use brand new Airbus A320 planes to fly to Taipei on a daily basis.

“We hope that with the opening of this new regional destination, we will further encourage travel for both leisure and business sectors,” Cebu Pacific president Lance Gokongwei said in the statement.

The company recently said it was buying 20 more Airbus A320 aircraft over the next six years at a cost of $1.3 billion.

Cebu Pacific, which started operations in 1996, already flies to Bangkok, Jakarta, Kuala Lumpur, Hong Kong, Singapore and to Incheon and Pusan in South Korea as well as numerous domestic destinations.

The airline will launch its Manila–Taipei service with a seat sale fare of only P888 one-way.

The sale will run from March 21 to 27 this year and is good for travel from June 13 to Sept. 30, 2007. Fare is exclusive of surcharges and government tax.

“We’re also proud to provide our Filipino overseas workers very affordable fares that will allow them to easily visit their families and relatives during weekends and long holidays. This is part of our commitment to making air travel a viable option for more people,” Go-kongwei said.

“Taipei is our eighth international destination. As we continue with our expansion program, we remain steadfast to our commitment to bring air travel closer to more Filipinos by continuing to provide the lowest fares to any destination we fly to,” Gokongwei said.

After the seat sale, the lowest ‘Go’ fare to Taipei starts from P1,999 one-way. (AFP/with PR)
