Wednesday, March 21, 2007 Glo declares April 7 a holiday
PRESIDENT Arroyo has declared April 7, Nov. 2 and Dec. 24 this year as special non-working holidays and June 11 as a non-working holiday.
April 7, which falls between Good Friday and Easter Sunday, was declared a special non-working day to give the people “the full and uninterrupted opportunity to ponder on the significance of the Holy Week and to properly observe its traditions with religious fervor, without prejudice to public interest.”
June 11, a Monday, was declared a non-working holiday in place of June 12, a Tuesday, which is supposed to be a regular holiday, provided that the observance of Independence Day shall remain on June 12.
Nov. 2 was declared a non-working day to give the people more time to observe All Saints’ Day.
Also, Dec. 24 will be a non-working day so the people will “have a more meaningful observance of Christmas and to give them greater opportunities to strengthen their ties with one another.”
Chapter 7, Section 26 of the Administrative Code of 1987 provides that a presidential order or proclamation can amend regular holidays and nationwide special holidays.
Department of Labor and Employment 7 Director Elias Cayanong said Central Visayas now has a 2.6 million labor force and 2.4 million of them are employed.
He said the workers will receive extra pay equivalent to 30 percent of their salary on April 7 and Nov. 2, while their salaries for June 11 will be doubled because it is a non-working holiday. (EOB)
