Speak out: The Filipino as ‘global citizen’ By Daryl Y. Mendoza University of San Carlos
WHAT is all this fuss about “globalization?”
To be honest, I don’t have any inkling about it, but one need not be a licensed civil engineer to know that a building is collapsing.
Pinoy Votes: Sun.Star Election 2007
Globalization, or the idea of it, is already knocking in our front door.
But are we ready for it?
I mean, the Philippines was cloistered in the convent for 300 years and is abruptly brought to the limelight.
So how does one hope to find a Filipino in a similitude of races packed on the global stage?
Indeed, the issue on Filipino identity is stronger than before because of the advent this “global village,” but what face do we want to show?
Do we show up wearing a habit?
Or do we do it wearing tuxedo?
This is the challenge to globalization, as it requires not only the opening of borders but also the development of a personal world view.
The point is, we are forced to embrace a world-view that transcends borders and colors and yet we could not settle simple things in our country.
So where will we find our identity?
If we can’t find it, what face do we expect to show to the global village?
Will we be faceless in the crowd?
Or maybe we can adopt a fancier name for ourselves to compensate for our lack of identity: global citizens.
