Gymnasts haul golds

DUMAGUETE City - Ma. Carmeli Garrovillo and Mary Mae Paca delivered stirring performances in gymnastics to help improve Cebu City’s defense of its over-all title in the Central Visayas Regional Athletic Association.

Garrovillo romped her way to four gold medals in the Elementary girls gymnastics, while Mary Mae Paca had five in the secondary girls.

Garrovillo got the gold in the hoop, ribbon and all-around contest and then teamed up with Jojelyn Badonio, and Karen Thea Velez to top the team contest.

Paca swept the ball, hoop, ribbon and all-around gold and also bagged the team contest with Marie Vinette Pacaña and Iwalani Negasca.

Meanwhile, after a slow start in athletics the Cebu City Niños picked up the pace in the second day of action in at the Magsaysay Elementary School in Sibulan, Negros Oriental here.

Over at the Perdices Memorial Coliseum Aquatic Center, the Niños split the championship titles in swimming with host Dumaguete City after Cebu City garnered the overall championship title in secondary boys with a total of 156 points including 12 first place finishes.

Dumaguete snared the overall title in elementary boys division swimming after racking up 151 points with 11 first place finishes.

Cebu City finished second in the elementary division with 110 points, while Dumaguete landed the second spot in the secondary division with 81 points.

Leading the cast of the Niños in the secondary boys division is John Solon, who dominated the 200m freestyle in 2:14.61 and the 400m freestyle in 4:50.92.

Dick Rowan Fernandez also contributed a gold for the Niños after topping the 200m butterfly in 2:43.96, while Jeffrey Yana added another gilt after taking 100m breaststroke title in 1:19.39.

Also giving Cebu City a gold was the 4x100m Medley Relay team, which topped its event. (JSV)
