Smokey Joe's cafe: The golden age of rock and roll

ELVIS meets Broadway in Smokey Joe’s Cafe, the musical extravaganza from St. John’s School Glee Club from Guam, USA on Saturday, March 24, 8 p.m. at SM Theater 1.

This lively show features music from the songwriting duo, Jerry Lieber and Mike Stoller, whose songs dominated the charts in the 50’s and ‘60’s and helped define early rock ‘n’ roll with hits like Jailhouse Rock, Stand By Me and Love Potion #9. Don’t go to Smokey Joe’s expecting a storyline, though, it simply doesn’t have one.

Featured in the cast are the members of the St. John’s School Glee Club of Guam. Also featured in this performance will be the members of the faculty, both on stage and in the band. Featured on stage will be no less than the head school master himself, Dr. Jorge Nelson, in a star performance crooning some of Elvis’ greatest hits. Accompanying all performers is a specially-formed live band of teachers, under the musical direction of Rolly Maiquez, Cheruibs Choir Director and Dave Janssen, Seraphs Choir and High School Band teacher. Directing the show is the husband and wife team of Allan and Cecile Nazareno. Allan, who was born and raised in Cebu and taught for a year in UP Cebu High School, is the PA Department Chair and Glee Club Adviser while Cecille is the Honor Choir Director.

This musical extravaganza is presented by the Arts Council of Cebu and SM City Cebu in cooperation with Equipment Technical Services, Solid Construction, Boysen Philippines, Nito’s International Venture, Inc., Directories Philippines Corporation, Metro Gaisano and New Century Accessories.

Interested parties may call the arts Council of Cebu office at 233-0452 and 233-0236 for details.
