Seares: It’s not your Innova, folks
By Pachico A. Seares
News Sense

THE Cebu City police are giving Innova, a Toyota brand, a bad name, at least in this part of the world.

Car buyers might think the Innova sucks because of the accidents the police fleet of Innovas has met: eight out of 10, as of last count.

Pinoy Votes: Sun.Star Election 2007

Billed as "A Beautiful [R]evolution," Innova is pushed by Toyota sales forces for "styling, comfort and luxury, power and performance, and safety."

Do the accidents involving Innovas diminish that claim?

Stats are small and limited. Innovas in police hands are a tiny fraction of the brand's millions of sold units. And the accidents haven't been traced to any vehicle defect yet.

A police official said the police Innovas might be cursed: "Have a priest bless them."

Chasing demons

If they are cursed, it must be the evil that, a priest once said on pulpit, clings to overpriced goods. But many police Innovas are bought by Cebu City and its officials, the mayor piously insists, are not corrupt.

So where did the demons come from? OK, holy water may chase demons away (maybe to dwell in newer overpriced vehicles), but will it cut the string of mishaps?

There must be some other cause you can't lay at devil's or car engineer's door. Did you say "car drivers"? Brilliant.

The accidents---starting with the sideswipe incident on a motel driveway in October last year to the car crash last week---all involved police drivers.

They say that nothing improves your driving like a police car following you. But if you follow a police car, will it improve the police driver's driving?

Whatever, it may not be your Innova, folks.
