DUMAGUETE City— Cebu City’s lone survivor in boxing, Jomari Yuson, did not disappoint the Niños yesterday as he made it all the way to the championship round in Sibulan, Negros Oriental during the 2007 Central Visayas Regional Athletic Association (Cviraa) meet.

The Talamban National High School pug Yuson, a veteran campaigner in the Palarong Pambansa, won a gold for the struggling Niños boxing team in the 45-kilogram division after he won via a referee-stopped-contest outclassed (RSC-O) decision in 45 seconds of the second round over George Dionsther of Cebu Province.

But Yuson was the only good news for Cebu City as Tagbilaran City won the overall title in boxing after three of its pugs won their finals match.

Heading the list for the successful Tagbilaran ring warriors is Melvin Basinga, who snared the crown in the 36-kilogram division by defeating Jonathan Danio of Lapu-Lapu, 5-0.

Gino Cabugangan added another gold after he topped the 39-kilogram category by defeating Tirso Bernales of Bohol, 5-0. Jomar Cordinillo ruled the 42-kilogram category by defeating Christian Rosal of Lapu-Lapu by walkover to add the final gold.

The final gold for boxing was captured by Kevin Baunsit of Mandaue City, who scored an RSC-O Jaylan Taghoy of Lapu-Lapu in 1:20 of the second round, in the 48-kilogram division.

But the Niños still lead the points race and are on track of copping their 14th-straight overall Cviraa title as they plucked gold medals in volleyball, athletics, softball, table tennis, lawn tennis, baseball and sepak takraw.

Cebu City currently lugs 358 points to grab the first place, heading into today’s final day, while host Dumaguete City is at second with 153 points.

Cebu Province is at third with 146 points, followed by Mandaue City at fourth with 121 points and Bohol at fifth with 113 points.

Among the Cebu City’s gold medalist yesterday are its secondary boys’ 4x100 medley team, girls’ 4x100 medley team and the girls’ 4x400 medley squad.
