THE hostage drama that transpired recently in Metro Manila and orchestrated by a certain Jun Ducat is something that every Filipino should reflect upon.
In these frustrating times of adversities, when solutions to serious national problems seem out of sight and the people are getting tired of hearing empty promises, it would seem justifiable for someone to come up with desperate means to attract attention.
The intention and ultimate goal of the hostage taker were good although the means may not be considered acceptable.
It was obvious right from the start that no harm was intended on the hostages.
I believe it was a perfectly executed calculated risk, perhaps done after the perpetrator figured over a long period of time that no other means was more effective to attain his purpose.
Indeed, there are those in the government who are in a position to alleviate our difficult conditions through acceptable means and yet have not done something satisfactory towards that end.
Ducat was not that stupid as not to be aware of the consequences of his act, yet he sacrificed himself to attain the greater good for the greater number.
What more noble deed can a man be capable of doing?
Ducat is the kind of man who deserves to be in the position to administer public service, possessing as he is the qualities of courage, sincerity and selflessness, and above all, concern for his fellow human being.
I salute the man.
He is the kind we Filipinos should be like, if we are really intent on saving our dear country.
The only way for evil to triumph is for the good to do nothing.
