Surban leads Padyak Pinoy qualifiers

NIÑO Surban, Albert Basergo and Robert Villaber arrived at the finish line together to lead the 30 cyclists who advanced to the next round in yesterday’s massed-start race of the 2007 Padyak Pinoy cycling race at the Cebu International Convention Center (CICC) in Mandaue City.

The trio concluded the 188-km. Mandaue-Bogo-Mandaue stage in five hours, 13 minutes and 42.21.

The top 30 cyclists in yesterday’s grind will compete against each other today in the individual time trial (ITT) race, which will be held in Danao City.

The top 16 qualifiers in this race will compete in the national finals set next month.

Surban, Basergo and Villaber started to leave the 40-man main pack entering Danao City. From that point onwards, the three completely broke away from the rest and never looked back again until the finish.

Finishing in the fourth and fifth places, respectively, are Nilo Barbalose and Dexter Nonato, who made identical clockings of 5:24:31.57, while Randy Carbonera (5:26:02.02) finished sixth.

Almer Camay, Paul Baco and Adonis Bohol, who logged similar clockings of 5:27:29.63, settled for the 7th to 9th spots, respectively. Also joining the 30 who qualified for today’s race are Vince Cadampog, Richard Navarro, Dioscoros Genonsalao and Glen Ibanez. (JSV)
