Wednesday, April 04, 2007 Panglao seeks water recycling
CEBU-grown Mactan Rock Industries Inc. (Mactan Rock) is starting an advocacy which will not only reduce the demand for water but will help avoid water pollution.
Mactan Rock president and chief executive officer Antonio Tompar, in an interview, has admitted that the company’s water recycling advocacy is in line with its wastewater treatment business.
“However, we (the company) can only do so much. This is why we are encouraging other water companies to venture into the (wastewater treatment) business to help bring back clean water,” he said.
Confidence
Tompar said there is profit in the business, as “wastewater now has economic value” due to recycling.
“If (many) will do water recycling, our rivers and seas would go back in the next 10 to 15 years,” he added.
Mactan Rock recently gained the confidence of the Panglao local government after it proposed to the legislators of Panglao, Bohol to set up a water treatment facility in the area.
In a statement, Panglao legislators led by Vice Mayor Pedro Fuertes agreed that the planned water treatment facility can help the residents and the local leaders reduce the demand for water, as well as in the efforts to clean the beaches of Panglao.
Destination
Panglao has been identified by President Arroyo as one of the key tourist destinations in Central Visayas super region.
The water treatment facility will be a 300-cubic meter facility that will store and treat the wastewater of resorts. After treatment, the water will be again pumped out to the resorts for their gardens, laundry and toilet use.
Ed Walag of the University of San Carlos said this will cut the local demand for water instead of it being thrown into the sea, causing water contamination.
