Wednesday, April 04, 2007 P30T raised for Sisnorio
LESS than two days after starting a fund-raising drive, regulars of the mannypacquio.ph forum have raised P31,520 for the family of the late boxer Lito Sisnorio.
Aside from the fund-drive by the website, the family of Sisnorio, who died hours after getting knocked out in the fourth round, is set to receive P135,000 from the Thailand promoter and P15,000 from the Games and Amusements Board according to philboxing.com.
The drive was started almost at the same time the news of the 24-year-old boxer’s death in Thailand was posted at the forum, which regularly gathers boxing fans from all over the world.
Aside from Cebu-based fans, who call themselves Paclanders, regulars from other parts of the country and even those in the US have also chipped in the drive.
Four people, including a poster from Baguio city, chipped in P500, while Ed dela Vega, a US-based dentist and a writer for Philboxing.com chipped in $200.
Noted Cebuano boxing patron, Antonio L. Aldeguer also gave P5,000.
The funds will be given to the family of the late boxer in Koronadal, South Cotabato. Mannypacquiao.ph owner, Dong Secuya and the site’s boxing editor and local judge Salven Lagumbay will hand the money themselves.
Meanwhile, GAB chairman Eric Buhain has cancelled all trips of boxers to Thailand following the death of Sisnorio, who reportedly left for Thailand without GAB’s nod.
According to Philboxing.com, Buhain will now coordinate with the Department of Foreign Affairs to inform the Thai government of the ban.
As suggested by veteran boxing scribe Ronnie Nathanielsz, Buhain will also coordinate with the Bureau of Immigration and the Department of Justice to stop future boxers from leaving for fights abroad with GAB’s nod. (ML)
