THE award-winning Ugly Betty premiered on Sunday at 9:15 p.m. after Us Girls, only on Studio 23, Kabarkada Mo!
Ugly Betty is the story of plain-Jane, plump and hideously-dressed Betty Suarez (America Ferrera), who is hired by publishing mogul Bradford Meade (Alan Dale) as assistant to his playboy son Daniel (Eric Mabius), the new editor of Mode Magazine, the bible of the fashion industry.
Though Betty isn’t the beautiful-but-brainless Mode Magazine prototype, Bradford hired her precisely because of her unattractiveness, because he was tired of Daniel seducing every female employee in sight. At first, Daniel made Betty’s professional life a living hell—berating and humiliating her every chance he gets. But the determined Betty decides to fight every difficult situation with the use of her unique skills and intelligence. Also there for Betty is her “support group” that consists of her father Ignacio (Tony Plana), her sister Hilda (Ana Ortiz) and her fellow “square peg” employee and friend Christina (Ashley Jensen). Betty also deals with the scheming ex-model Creative Director Wilhelmina Slater (Vanessa Williams), who only lives for two things: Mode Magazine and Botox. Wilhelmina is out to sabotage Daniel and Betty every opportunity she gets.
Ugly Betty is based on the Colombian telenovela Yo Soy Betty La Fea, which was a smash hit worldwide. It is adapted into an American setting by executive producer-actress Salma Hayek who also appears on the show as Sofia Reyes, in addition to playing a cameo role as an actress on a fictional telenovela watched by the main character’s family in early episodes.
