Speak out: Jesus’ violent death
By Jovenson Mabalatan
Escario St., Cebu City

LENT, culminating in the death and resurrection of Jesus Christ, has passed.

Jesus did not die a natural death.

Pinoy Votes: Sun.Star Election 2007

The chronicle of events leading to His demise shows a picture of unmitigated violence on his person.

The question now is whether or not His death through violence was necessary.

Was his violent death intentionally plotted so mankind will remember it?

God’s ways are mysterious indeed!

But on the level of purely human and therefore limited perception, I say that the torment that the son of God had suffered was not necessary as there were other means to convince people to abandon their sinful ways.

God, being all powerful, had all the means to choose a peaceful manner of death.

Maybe death was necessary for salvation, but the violence was not.

The violent death of Jesus shows that even the supreme planner considered violence as an essential ingredient to earthly existence.

Is it God’s tacit endorsement of violence as option in effecting change?
