Siso splits title matches

SALLY Mae Siso’s scorching run at the Truflex National Junior Tennis Tournament Rizal Memorial Tennis Courts was doused yesterday, as she dropped one of her finals assignment.

The 13-year-old Siso succumbed to the prowess of the much-older Regina Santiago, 1-6, 3-6, in the Girls 16-Under championship to squander a possible twin kill in the competition.

“(But) it is okay because it is an older age group, and what we are after is that she will be ahead in points in this division,” said Siso’s mother, Sally.

The tournament, which is rated Group II by the Philippine Tennis Association, stakes points needed for participants to rise in the national standings.

Siso, however, will not go home empty-handed, as she topped the Girls 14 division by defeating Shanelle Olivarez, 6-2, 6-4.

It was sweet revenge for Siso, an incoming University of San Carlos South Campus High School freshman.

Olivarez humbled her in their last outing during the World Juniors Cup qualifying round last February.

Although she made it to the RP junior team, Siso only finished third over-all because of that loss, disqualifying her for a free trip to the World Juniors Cup in New Delhi, India.

Luckily, Siso received support from longtime patron Jonathan Guardo, making it possible for her to compete in the international competition.

Another Cebuano also split his assignments yesterday.

Jacob Lagman wasted the opportunity to bring home two titles, as he lost in the Boys 14-Under division while advancing to the Boys 12-Under class finals.

He lost again, 1-6, 0-6, to Kyle Cordero, whom he has never toppled, and whose killer strokes he could not find an answer.

Cordero was in luck as he automatically gets the title after his supposed finals opponent, Bernardine “Niño” Siso, skipped the match.

India trip

Niño entered the final round after trouncing Arjun dela Cruz, 6-3, 6-0.

But he left for India this morning for the World Junior Cup boys contest at the Khanna Tennis Stadium Delta Complex.

Lagman, the Boys 12-Under division national top seed from St. Benedict Learning Center, defeated John Maverick Ribaya, 6-0, 6-0, to arrange a titular showdown with Calvin Canlas.

Meanwhile, Tuburan’s Vince Mark Tabotabo kept his title hopes alive after defeating Ivan Valenzuela, 6-1, 6-1, to move to the final round of the 10 and Under Unisex division against Vince Salas. (MCB)
