ILOILO CITY—The Prisaa Region 7 opened their bid in the Private Schools Athletic Association national finals on a strong note with wins in volleyball and basketball.

The men’s volleyball team got off to a hot start after blasting the hapless Davao in straight sets, 25-12, 25-13 and 25-16, to officially tally the first win in the tournament.

Heading the list of Prisaa-7’s spikers in the division are University of San Carlos (USC) Warriors Roderick Arenasa, Edward Carlo Tecson, Mark Joseph Pepito, Dexter Tuazon, Ruel Lato, Jerome Maestre, Elizor Uy and Harvey Bernil.

Also in the team are Foundation University’s Arnel Amadeo, University of the Visayas’ Arisjune Getuaban and Jonathan Quizol, University of San Jose-Recoletos’ (USJ-R) Jackie Yrog-yrog and University of Southern Philippines Foundation’s James Ryan Rivera.

Strong Opening

Meanwhile, the men’s and women’s basketball teams logged separate victories yesterday during the opening day of action at the University of San Agustin.

The men, mentored by USC Warriors coach Jay Ramirez and manned mostly by the Warriors with reinforcements from USJ-R, Holy Name University and Bohol Institute of Technology, overcame their height deficit as they demolished Prisaa-1, 104-73.

The women, on the other hand, logged a lopsided 90-49 win over Caraga.

The men showed no respect for Region 1’s height superiority as they wasted no time in breaking away from Dagupan at the opening buzzer and never looked back again.

Early lead

The Central Visayas cagers established an early 28-11 edge at the end of the opening period behind the early outburst of Niño Ramirez of the Warriors and Lyndon Gudez of the USJ-R Jaguars.

Prisaa-1 tried to make a comeback in the second canto but Prisaa-7 held on for a 46-32 halftime advantage.

It was the same story in the second half as Prisaa-1 failed to find a solution to Prisaa-7’s stifling defense.

Ramirez topscored for Prisaa-7 with 20 markers, while Gudez chipped in 19 of his own.

Earlier, the Angeles University Foundation Great Danes-powered Prisaa-3 escaped past Calabarzon, 91-87.

Meanwhile, the games will officialy open today with PSC chairman William Ramirez as the guest of honor.

On the other hand, Philippine Sports Commission chairman William “Butch” Ramirez will grace today’s formal opening ceremony as the program’s guest of honor.
