ILOILO City—The Prisaa 7 delegation opened its campaign in the medal-rich events on a bright note as it grabbed the second spot at the start of the hostilities in swimming in the 2007 Private Schools Athletic Association (Prisaa) National Games at the Iloilo City Sports Complex Aquatic Center.
The Prisaa 7 tankers carted an opening-day total of four gold, 13 silver and seven bronze medals to secure the second place next to host Prisaa-6, which hoarded a total of 19 golds, six silvers and five bronzes in its initial outing.
The Prisaa 7’s gold medals came from the men’s 200-meter 4x50 Medley Relay team of Andrei Yosef Ynclino, Hywell Ramacho, Ryan Ramacho and France Baguio. The team finished the event in two minutes and 05.51 seconds.
Meanwhile, another medal-rich event, athletics, will start today with 13 gold medals at stake in the men’s and women’s divisions.
The events to be featured in both divisions are the high jump, shot put, 1,500-meter run, 400m dash and 100m dash, the men’s long jump, women’s discus throw and women’s 5,000-meter walk.
In the team events, Region 7 extended its excellent performance to two consecutive days as the Central Visayas delegation won all but one of its games in different venues around the city here.
The women’s basketball team cruised off to their second-straight victory in the tournament with a 79-40 bashing of Prisaa-9 at the Iloilo Sports Complex.
The Prisaa 7 women cagers, under coach Reggie Licanda, which is composed mostly of players from the University of Cebu Lady Webmasters with reinforcements from the University of San Carlos Warriors and Holy Name University of Bohol, opened their bid the other day with a huge 90-49 victory over Caraga.
Opening win
The next conquest of Prisaa 7 came in the lawn tennis competition with its men’s and women’s teams blasting separate foes to advance to the next round at the University of San Agustin gym.
The Prisaa 7’s women netters, under coach Robert Soquiño, hurdled their opening foe easily as they blotted out Prisaa-3 to advance to the next round courtesy of UC’s Lovelie Soquiño and USC’s Floriza Alesna and Jane Rachel Idos.
Soquiño tallied the first victory for the Central Visayas athletes with a powerful 8-0 win over her Prisaa 3 rival in the straight 8 event.
Prisaa 7 completed its sweep in the event after Alesna and Idos trampled their counterparts in the doubles event, 8-1.
The Prisaa 7 men’s lawn tennis team, which is mentored by Fritz Tabura, was also successful in its debut after defeating Prisaa-3.
The University of the Visayas’ Oswaldo Dumoran Jr. doled out the first win for Prisaa 7 with an 8-1 victory in the singles event, while USJ-R’s Jedrey Tan and USC’s Gerry Huyoa demolished their counterparts from Region 3, 8-0.
The Southwestern University (SWU) Cobras-powered sepak takraw team also started their campaign with a bang as they manhandled Prisaa-5, 2-0, at the Central Philippines University in Jaro.
SWU’s Arnold Niedo, Jessel Yaun and Joseph Rey Castro logged in a 22-20, 16-21, 15-11 victory in the first regu event, while UV’s Kent John Joaquin and SWU’s Roymie Camacho and Ludivico Taleon completed Prisaa-7’s sweep with a 21-19, 13-21 and 15-7 victory in the second regu.
