Group marches for ‘new heroes’

SOME 2,700 members of Gawad Kalinga’s (GK) Cebu Chapter marched recently for GK Isang Milyong Bayani, which aims to promote a culture of heroism.

The GK Isang Milyong Bayani re-launching was held in time for the Edsa revolution anniversary and started with a march from the Cebu Normal Universiry (CNU) to the Fuente Osmeña circle.

Students from the different universities in Cebu, fraternity and sorority members, Sangguniang Kabataan members from the different barangays joined the march-rally.

The crowd gathered at the Fuente Rotunda, where a program was prepared.

There were testimonials from the GK advocates.

Live performances by local bands, like Circle of Wilis, Birth Control, BMW and Aggressive Audio, entertained the crowd until 10 p.m.

The Youth for Christ (YFC) Cebu Chapter was the main oraganizer of the event.

Zobela Group Corp. and Pepsi are the co-presentors. Dunkin Donuts, Fruit Magic, Audio Man, Billy Box are among the sponsors.

Difference

Cristopert Ocañada, the event head, said that he was very much overwhelmed after seeing that most of the participants were youth.

“I believe that the youth really wanted to do something in making a difference,” Ocañada said.

“Since we (youth) have the ideal potentials, such as strength, fresh knowledge and talents—plus GK—that gives us the opportunity to harness and spend our time productively. There is still hope for this country,” he added.

Xela Ester Rosal, the production head, was also happy with the turnout.

“It really shocked me,” she said, adding that she didn’t expect so many people to support GK’s cause.

Ames Rubi, a 3rd year BS Math student, said she chose to be a GK youth volunteer since she believes she could make a difference.
