Cebuanos beat Indonesia in softball open

THE Cebuano softball squad created a stir following its 7-1 win over an Indonesian team at the start of the 2007 Summer Grand Slam Philippine National Softball Championships yesterday at the Rosario Sports Arena in Pasig City.

The H&B Men’s Softball team came up with strong plays with Darius Bacarisas scoring three runs and two RBIs (runs-batted-in) over the Indonesian commercial league circuit champion.

“The hardship (of going to Manila) might be a blessing in disguise because our win over the visiting team made us the instant talk of the tournament,” said Jasper Cabrera, who scored a run in the defining third inning.

Cabrera, a member of the RP Blu Boys, once played as an import of the same team they defeated yesterday.

The Cebuanos opened the game with a 2-0 lead with Manuel Bacarisas Jr. slugging far left for a triple before Darius also drove a triple that almost went beyond the fence. Cabrera then sent Darius home to end their first turn at bat.

The lead increased to 6-0 on the third inning with Manuel Jr., Darius, Cabrera and Roldan Bacarisas scoring a run each.
German Bacarisas then scored the final run in the final inning before the Indonesians scored its lone run on their final turn at bat.

“We’re going to play our best to show that we have the talent for this game. We will try our best to win. This is a very strong team, we have four current members of the RP Blu Boys, while the rest are former members of the national team,” said Cabrera. (RCM)
