Torre loses gas

THINGS don’t look good for grandmaster Eugene Torre in the final two of the Philippine Open.

After two great rounds, Torre got caught up with the great plays of Chinese GM Ni Nua and lost to the second highest-ranked GM in the seventh round.

The loss dropped Torre to 4.5 points for a tie with 11 other players for fourth, while Nua took the solo second spot with 5.5 points.

GM Wang Yue, the highest-ranked GM in the event, strengthened his hold of the lead after humbling fellow GM Li Chao to tally six points.

Tied at third place with five points are GM Chao, GM Zhang Zhong, GM Zhao Jun GM Shilong Li and Filipino Ernesto Fernandez. Zhong and Jun drew their game; Li halted Zhang Ziyang, while Fernandez outplayed GM Rogelio Antonio Jr.

Aside from Torre, the other players at fourth are GM Ehsan Maghami Gahem, GM Utut Adianto, GM Suranto Megaranto, GM Mark Paragua, GM Wang Hao, IM Oliver Dimakiling, FM Julio Sandorra, IMs Wesley So and Fernie Donguines and NM Hamed Nouri.

Akobian got the better of IM Barlo Nadera in their match up; Ghaem held Paragua to a drawn game; Adianto and Megaranto also drew their match; Hao halved his point with Dimakiling, Sandorra beat Lalith Babu of India; So trampled Rolando Nolte; Donguines bested fellow IM Richard Bitoon; and Nouri stopped WFM Irene Sukandar of Indonesia.

Those who share fifth spot with four points are GM Antonio, IM Nadera, Ziyang, NM Mirabeau Maga, Roderick Nava and Efren Bagamasbad.

Cebuano FM Anthony Makinano had a good game in the seventh as he beat Arlan Cabe to tally 3.5 points. (JGC)
