Cebuanos’ run ends in softball tourney

THE winning run of Cebuanos came to a screeching halt when they suffered their first defeat, 1-5, to defending champions and host team Pasig.

Pasig got the better of the clash of the top teams in the 2007 Summer Grand Slam Philippine National Open Softball Championships at the Rosario Sports Arena in Pasig City.

The H&B Softball Team of Cebu failed to bring their A-game in the encounter with Pasig, faltering in their rush to the finals.

“All the players were off. We had untimely hits but it’s no excuse. We lost to a better team but we don’t lose hopes yet. We are still alive. Kaya pa ni nato ma-champion,” RP Blu Boys coach Sacky Bacarisas told Sun.Star Cebu.

Against Zamboanga

At 9 a.m. today, the Cebuanos face a stiff assignment as it plays Zamboanga City, the winner of the encounter of No.2 teams.

Zamboanga eliminated Laguna. If they win, Cebu will play Pasig City in the knockout championship scheduled at 3 p.m.

With starting pitcher Felix Custodio playing with toothache and lacking sleep, Pasig was able to score two runs in the opening inning.

As with their defense, Cebuanos also struggled in their offense and it took them until the bottom of the third inning to score its lone run, courtesy of Manuel Bacarisas Jr.

Errors

Pasig scored another run on the fifth inning and two more on the sixth as the defending champions did not allow the Cebuanos to make their moves.

“We just hope that Felix will be okay by tomorrow. But Pasig is really a tough team, they also have four Blu Boys in the line-up. In addition, they also have national baseball players in their line-up. But we lost not because of the way they play, we lost because of our errors,” said playing coach Dionisio Bacarisas.

According to Dionisio, Zamboanga is another team to beat but it’s the hunger that will make them win.

“Zamboanga is a good team, we all knew that. But we are hungry, that makes the difference,” added Dionisio. (RCM)
