Saturday, April 21, 2007 Nietes to defend title against Thai challenger in Victorias City
WBO Asia-Pacific minimumweight champion Donnie “The Snake Charmer” Nietes will try to defend his belt for the first time against Thai challenger Thongthailek Por Vorasing today at the New Victorias City Coliseum in Victorias City, Negros Occidental.
The Bacolod City native Nietes tipped the scales yesterday at 104.5 lbs while the Thongthailek scaled at exactly 105 pounds.
Also featured in the card promoted by Sammy Gello-ani is the Philippine championship for the vacant national junior welterweight division between ALA Boy Mark Jason Milleguen and veteran contender Christopher Saluday.
Milleguen weighed at exactly 140lbs while Saluday tipped it at 137.5 lbs.
Nietes, who parades an impressive 19-1-3 win-loss-draw record packed with 11 knockouts, will try to improve his WBO No.7 and IBF No.11 rankings in front of an expected sellout crowd in Victorias.
This will be the first-ever boxing promotion held in the city, known as miller of the finest sugarcane.
Meanwhile, Milleguen (6-1, 5KOs) will need tough it out against the strong punching Saluday (11-13-2, 6KOs).
The referee assigned to this fight is Cebuano Tony Peson while judges hanbling it are Salven Lagumbay, Jonathan Davis, and Severino Necesario.
Also seeing action in the card are Reyman Salim vs. Joel de la Cruz for 10 rounds, Warlito Parrenas vs. Jerome Bontog, Gerald Nietes vs. Albert Villacampa, Franklin Albia vs. Marjo Borres, Ricky Sismundo vs. Jun Intor, and Gil Milleguen vs. Markyll Taroja.
Completing the card is the bout between women fighters Gretchen Abaniel of Puerto Princesa, Palawan vs. Nelita Tanaza of Sadangh, Mountain Province for four rounds. (RCM)
