Comelec requests 2T more ballot boxes from Manila
EVEN before the ballot boxes for Cebu City and Province were delivered to their custodians, Provincial Election Supervisor Lionel Castillano submitted another request for more ballot boxes.
Castillano told reporters yesterday that he was in Manila when he learned that only around 10,000 ballot boxes were delivered to Cebu through a private forwarding firm.

He immediately wrote a letter to ask the Commission on Elections (Comelec) for around 2,000 more boxes.
The local office needs more boxes considering that the plebiscite for the declaration of Lapu-lapu City as an urbanized city will also be done during the May 14 elections.
Comelec has requested 11,786 boxes based on the reported need of the election officers of the 47 towns and six cities in Cebu.
The province needs new ballot boxes as most of the 2004 ballot boxes are still with the Presidential Electoral Tribunal because of the election protest filed by defeated vice presidential bet Loren Legarda against Vice President Noli de Castro.
The new boxes arrived at Pier 7 last Monday but have yet to be delivered to the city and provincial treasurers because the forwarding firm has to wait for the bill of lading from Manila.
Cebu City’s south district has an allocation of 1,250 boxes, while another 1,250 will be given to north district.
In the province, Lapu-Lapu City has the most number of ballot boxes, at 2,000. It is followed by Mandaue City, 831; Talisay City, 500; and Toledo City, 450.
Cleofe Gonzaga, administration officer of the Provincial Treasurer’s Office, said they will conduct an inventory of the boxes as soon as these are delivered and they will immediately inform the respective municipal and city treasurers to get the ballot boxes. (MBG)
