Cesafi pledges to include beach volleyball

AFTER realizing that the Cebu Schools Athletic Foundation Inc. (Cesafi) was not able to hold a beach volleyball event last season, officials are now making sure that there will be one this year.

“We are very proud of our players from the University of the Visayas (UV) and Southwestern University (SWU). It (beach volleyball) will be on top of the priorities next year and if I will still be the commissioner, I will see to it that it will push through,” said Cesafi commissioner Felix Tiukinhoy.

A new set of officers will be elected in the second week of May. Tiukinhoy’s tenure is co-terminus with that of president Engr. Oscar Tuazon.

Beach volleyball was “forgotten” from the calendar of events, and since it was already the end of the Cesafi season, the officials decided to just scrap it and carry it over for the next year.

Last weekend, Cebu pulled off a 1-2 finish in the national finals of the Nestea Beach Volleyball in Boracay. UV and SWU are Cesafi-member schools.

Cebu snagged five of the six slots that were allotted for Visayas teams. These teams are all members of Cesafi, including the University of San Jose-Recoletos, University of Southern Philippines Foundation and University of San Carlos.

“We will make sure that we could give these teams an avenue for competition,” Tiukinhoy added.

Meanwhile, in preparation for his possible exit from the Cesafi, Tiukinhoy met with the athletic directors from the different member-schools to assess the performance of the past season and to make amends or changes if needed.

“I made them complete a calendar of all activities, including regional and national meets and intramural date so that it will not be in conflict with the Cesafi events. This way, it will be easier on whoever will take over as the new commissioner,” Tiukinhoy said.

He also added that audiences can expect major changes in the running of the Cesafi. Although he refuses to elaborate, he said that it will entirely erase the reputation that the league is designed solely for basketball. (MCB)
