RP netters lose opening game

THE girls RP junior tennis team opened its campaign in the World Junior Cup tennis tournament on a sour note after bungling its first assignment, Tuesday in New Delhi, India.

However, the RP girls’ team— composed of Cebu City’s Sally Mae Siso, Martina Guba and Shanine Mae Olivarez— managed to put up an aggressive fight before finally bowing to their Australian opponents.

The budding lady netters of the Philippines gave the players from Down Under a run for their money as the former stretched two of their three matches to three sets.

Olivarez became RP’s first casualty as she squandered an early lead and lost to Jennifer Nguyen, 6-3, 2-6, 2-6.

Dumaguete City’s Guba was the next to fall as she dropped her game in the team event’s second singles match, 4-6, 4-6, against Alexandra Nancarrow.

In the doubles event, Siso and Guba came close to snaring the win, but Nancarrow and her teammate, Nina Khoury, were simply too much for the Visayas bets to handle.

The University of San Carlos South Campus’ Siso and Guba lost the first set,1-7, but quickly bounced back into contention with a 6-3 win in the following set to forge a rubbermatch.

But the Filipino tandem’s guns suddenly went silent in the set that mattered most as they were skinned alive by the Aussies, 0-6.

“It was unfortunate that we were bracketed in the killer draw, where they were joined by strong teams like Australia,” said Siso’s mother Sally.

The RP team, which is spearheaded by coach Rolando Ruel, will face another powerhouse team, China, in their next assignment. (MCB)
