Bogo crowd ‘surprises’ One Cebu

GOV. Gwendolyn Garcia and her party campaigned yesterday in Bogo, the hometown of her opponents, the Martinezes.

Both Garcia and Vice. Gov. Gregorio Sanchez admitted they were surprised by the crowd that greeted them, which the police estimated at 3,000.

Pinoy Votes: Sun.Star Election 2007

Sanchez thanked Bogo for the overwhelming majority he got in the 2004 election, although he pointed out that the votes he and former congressman Celestino “Junie” Martinez Jr., his former running mate, got were more than the number of registered voters.

Watch your votes, he urged the crowd.

He also said that he left the Martinezes because his style of politics does not fit with their style, which he said was anchored on revenge.

Garcia, on the other hand, reminded the people how she lost in the town in the last elections with only about 700 votes, compared to Junie, who got more than 30,000 votes.

But she told them she has not forgotten Bogo and even asphalted two road segments in the town.

She also enumerated other projects that she has implemented in the other towns but that did not reach Bogo because their local officials refused them.

With Garcia and Sanchez were former Provincial Board (PB) member Benhur Salimbangon, who is running against Celestino “Tining” Martinez III for the fourth district’s seat in Congress, and PB aspirants Joven Mondigo Jr. and Ribomaphil Holganza Jr.

Rep. Clavel Asas-Martinez is running for vice governor with Rep. Antonio Yapha, who is challenging Garcia. Junie Martinez is running for mayor of Bogo town.

Last night, Garcia proclaimed the candidates for Bogo under her One Cebu-Kampi party.

Mayoral candidate Nonong Hortelano promised a water system for Bogo, which he said the past administration has failed to give.

During the governor’s speech, the crowd near the stage shouted they want change for Bogo.

Asked why they were there, most of those who attended said they wanted to see the governor in person.

Marissa Isay, who was in the audience, said the people who gathered last night were not even invited but were only informed that the governor was coming. They waited for at least five hours.

Another woman, who refused to be named, said they hope Garcia’s local candidates will be able to solve illegal fishing in Nailon because this has not been cracked by the incumbent officials. Another one said she will be supporting Garcia because she has asphalted so many roads. (MBG)
