THE Salazar Colleges of Science and Institute of Technology swatters copped another title after ruling the Cuenco Cup softball tournament at the Basak National High School grounds, Sunday.
The no.4 seed SCSIT sluggers had to do hard battle versus heavy favorite Dignos Group before eking out an 8-2 win in the finals.
Having played three games in one day failed to dampen the spirit of SCSIT as they immediately took control of the game at the start of the first inning.
The Salazar batters in its first game in the semis, defeated No.3 seed Carcar All-Stars, 11-1, to arrange a duel against the loser of the Pusok All-Star- Dignos Group battle.
The Dignos Group, which finished the elimination round at No.2, won over topseed Pusok All-Stars, 12-2, and waited for their rivals in the finals, which turned out to be the SCSIT batters.
Genaro Macayan made the first run for the softball power SCSIT, before Roldan Bacarisas scored a triple box and two run-batted-ins (RBIs) to send Rolly Bacarisas and John Magno to the home plate. Goody de la Cerna then sent Roldan home for a four-run inning.
SCSIT pitcher Sherwin Fernandez made his own mark in the game as he shut down the Dignos players for two innings in helping his team build a 5-0 edge at the end of the second inning, when Clark de Mar reached the homeplate on an RBI hit of Jordan Bacarisas.
Carry White de la Cerna scored the first run for Dignos Group at the bottom of the third to cut their deficit to 1-5. RCM
But that failed to spark a fire for Dignos as SCSIT again scored two runs courtesy of Serfico Tabares and Russel Cabrera at the top of the fifth after a scoreless fourth inning.
Nalding Dignos scored a run on his team’s turn at bat to make it a 7-2 game.
Fernandez again stamped his class in the game as he inked another no-hit for SCSIT, which held Dignos scoreless in the final two innings.
Zaldy Bacarisas put icing on the cake for the Salazar sluggers’ victory with another run in the final inning to ink the final score. (RCM)
